Lilia Chan Pao (傳進), Coordinator, Acolytes Section
Before Lilia came to study Buddhism in Ocean Sky, she practiced her faith by offering incense for the well-being of her family. Lilia always felt there was so much injustice in this world, and couldn’t find resolution to many sad incidents in her life.
Lilia reflected: “Since I came to Ocean Sky in August of 2005, my outlook in life has gradually changed. By attending meditation classes, chanting the liturgy, listening to Dharma talks, and helping-out as a volunteer, I am slowly learning that bad habits such as greed, jealousy, pride, and most of all, our attachment to this ego should be eradicated to achieve peace and true happiness.”
As the coordinator of the acolytes, Lilia has contributed a lot to the cohesiveness of the group, and is very competent in handling various unforeseen incidents, guiding the acolytes to do a good job during ceremonies and activities. Her faith in the Buddha Dharma, and in the Sangha of Ocean Sky has never wavered. By setting such a good example, Lilia was able to inspire her whole family to come to the monastery. Now, they also have become part of the Ocean Sky family. It is interesting to note that together with her husband Edwin Pao, and two boys, Tyrone and Heimer, their
combined Dharma names mean “Diligence in accomplishing the way (精進辦道).”
Lilia continues, “The lessons in Ocean Sky have taught me that I have to practice perseverance and to let go of all attachments. In my daily life, if I can apply the virtues of compassion and wisdom, and maintain a pure, unmoving, and detached mind, then I would have found the right direction for a meaningful life. I am especially grateful to the Grand Master for his vow of compassion in widely disseminating Buddha’s teachings, so that all weary sentient beings can find a safe home in their search for liberation from suffering.”
